It’s that time of year when I look in the mirror and shutter at the sight of my white pasty skin. I don’t know why it is, but everything looks better when you have a little tan. Living in Chicago, my skin hasn’t seen the sun now for five or six months. Not that it’s ever supposed to see the sun. Most dermatologists recommend only 10-15 minutes of sun exposure per day and that’s not to tan, but for vitamin D. And since tanning beds are also a no-no, a girl’s only option is sunless tanner.
Thank the Lord they’ve perfected sunless tanners. A reader and I were reminiscing on Facebook about the first sunless tanners to hit the market back in the mid-80’s when we were in high school. They were washable roll-ons. If you’re in your 40’s I’m sure you remember. They were awful, but I still used them because anything was better than being pasty white. Ok, looking back on the pictures of myself now, I can honestly say pasty white was better than the “I think I look awesome, but I don’t” orange color I had! Glad that’s a thing of the past!
There are so many great sunless tanners out there right now, it’s seriously hard to choose. And now that they’ve calmed down the smell and color transference problems (didn’t you hate when you woke up and found your sheets all grungy from tanner?), they’re a viable alternative to the sun. That is if you have the energy to put them on. Sometimes by the time it comes to spending the extra time to put on the sunless tanner, I’m spent.
So when you’ve had it with your white skin and you’re ready to invest a few minutes to apply sunless tanner, I have a couple that my friends and I love. My personal favorite and the favorite of most of my friends is L’Oreal Sublime Bronze™ Towelettes For Body (I use it for my face too!):
All you do is open up the little pouch and take out the perfectly moist towelettes.
You just wipe the towelette over your body for a streak-free, natural looking tan. In general, your tan comes out about two shades darker than your natural skin tone. I have friend who has very fair Irish skin and she uses these wipes. Her tan always looks perfectly natural. What I like the most about them is the tan comes out light and darkens with each application.
My second choice for a sunless tanner is one you may not have heard of. My friend, Lisa, from Love My Results Beauty turned me on to it. It’s made by a company called Sun Laboratories and it’s called SUN Self Tanning Lotion. I use the ultra dark and I have light skin. This stuff gives a natural noticeable tan in one application. Be warned, it goes on and comes out of the bottle very dark (brown, like chocolate).
The color actually helps you identify the areas of the skin you’ve covered so you don’t miss any spots and have less chance of streaks. I definitely appreciate this! On the bottle it warns to wash your hands. That really is the only down side of this product. You either have to wear plastic gloves (which I personally hate) or wash your hands in between applying the product to different areas of your body. If you don’t wear gloves or wash your hands in between apply the product to the differenct areas of your body, you’ll end up with dark/tan palms. Not attractive. This all sounds like a hassle I know, but trust me, the tan you get from this product is well worth the effort.
I found this video where a girl tries the SUN Self Tanning Lotion and shows the results. I think you’ll agree, it gives a wonderful tan.
While researching for this post, I found this great article on the best way to apply sunless tanner. I think we all know the key is to exfoliate! Unfortunately, sunless tanner doesn’t work too well applied on top of dry flaky skin!
