If you follow the blog, you know that yesterday I wore this poncho open with a black tank underneath and statement pendant necklace.
Today, I received a comment from a loyal reader on my poncho post:
“I bought a similar poncho-like item from Michael Stars…I just can’t decide if it looks like a tent on me or not. How do I avoid that?! Your look is definitely NOT looking like a tent!”
It’s true, wearing these big ponchos can be overwhelming. I mean it’s almost as if you’re draping a blanket over yourself. I think it’s even more of a concern if you’re not on the tall side. I think what makes this poncho work on me and not look like a tent is the material is on the lighter side and not so bulky. In other words, it lays nicely and “flows” over my body. The other thing that makes it work on me is the proportion. Even being tall (in case you’re wondering, I’m just over 5’8″), I like to add a bit of a heel when I’m wearing something like this. It helps balance out the look. I know people wear ponchos with flats, but for me, I would just feel frumpy.
That said, if you’re still worried about your poncho looking like a “tent” on you, I wanted to show another way to wear a poncho and that is to belt it.
Here are some things to consider when adding a belt to your poncho look: 1) Make sure your proportions are correct. A skinny belt with this oversized poncho wouldn’t look right. A 2 1/2 – 3 inch belt is best. I went with a 2 1/2 inch belt. 2) Make sure the belt is simplistic. You don’t want to get crazy with the belt especially if your poncho has a pattern. 3)Let the poncho naturally go inside the belt. When I say this I mean don’t try to even out all the gathers etc. Just throw the belt on. If you start fussing, it just won’t look right. Trust me on this one! and 4) MOST IMPORTANTLY, only belt the front of the poncho. Leave the back of the poncho free flowing. If you include the back you risk looking you’ve got too much material stuffed inside your belt and it will be way too bulky. Plus, you’ll have a hard time moving your arms and you don’t want that!
So, Betsy, belt that poncho and you won’t have to worry about “tent” syndrome!:) Hope this helps!
Have a great weekend, all!
