Keeping It Local: Consignment Shopping at Your Best Friend’s Closet

I’m a changed woman.

No, I haven’t re-found God or had a near death experience (thank the Lord), but I did find the holy grail of shopping- or at least my husband thinks I did! And can you believe it was only a half a mile from my house?

As you’ve probably figured out, I’m a clothes hound.

Since I only have so much room in my closet, every season I do a clean out. And whenever I need to find a new home for my very gently worn clothing, I take them to Your Best Friend’s Closet, a consignment store in Algonquin, IL.

In fact, here I am dropping off a stash:

I’ve been taking my clothes here for years, though I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never shopped here – that is until a few a weeks ago when I decided to take my first dive into consignment shopping.

The owner of Your Best Friend’s Closet, Marianne, says she’s “changing the face of consignment one best friend at a time” and I surely left a changed woman.

Marianne opened Your Best Friend’s Closet (YBFC) nearly nine years ago. She now has over 3,800 consignors and over 5,000 square feet of shopping fun. Can you believe over 25,000 people walk through the doors of YBFC every year? That’s a lot of people!!!

My shopping experience began with a meeting with my very own personal shopper. Yes, you heard me, personal shopper!

Meet Amy!

Now Amy isn’t just any person off the street. No, no, no. Amy began her career as a make-up artist and when she started outfitting models during photo shoots, she soon became a stylist to the stars. She had some big time clients she would shop with whenever they flew into town. Now you can only find her at YBFC!

And let me tell you, this woman’s got it going on!

Amy can look at your body type and know immediately what will or will not work on you. And can she accessorize?!

Want to be in the know when the next Louis Vuitton comes in? Amy’s your gal. She’ll make a note of the item you’re after and give you a call right when it comes in. No having to keep stopping in day after day to see if it’s there. She makes it easy for you to have first dibs! I love that!

After talking to me about my lifestyle and the types of clothes I like, she went and gathered not one, but eight complete head-to-toe outfits for me including shoes and accessories! Here’s the unbelievable part. Amy is so good at what she does that she unknowingly pulled clothes for me that I had brought in for consignment the day before. Given that YBFC gets something like 2,000 NEW ITEMS A WEEK, that’s quite a feat!

Here she is showcasing some of the awesome things she pulled for me:

Now I’m not going to go show you all the outfits Amy put together for me, just my favorite:

JUST KIDDING!  I gotcha, didn’t I?

There’s one key thing you’ve got to realize when walking into YBFC for the first time, and that’s that like it or not, you’re going to have fun!

It’s definitely not your average shopping experience. Everyone working at YBFC loves their job and they’re not afraid to show it…and they have an intercom and they aren’t afraid to use it! Don’t believe me? Check out this cute You Tube video they made:

Introduction to Your Best Friend’s Closet

Ya, they made an announcement the day I was there parading around the store in this get up. People were laughing and screaming. It was a hoot!

You get the feeling after spending time in YBFC that well, you’re in your best friend’s closet! People don’t just shop there because of the great merchandise, they shop there because they’re among friends and it’s fun! Where else can you shop and every few minutes find yourself in the middle of an all out celebration? Fill your Savvy Shopper Card (a frequent buyer’s program) and bells ring, people cheer. This is what I call all out enthusiasm for shopping, and I love it!

Here’s a quick look inside the store:

Everything is organized by color and type of item. Price tags are easy to see and read. No rummaging through piles in this store.

And shoes? Did someone say shoes?

Did you see cute little Marianne peaking out there on top?

And that’s not all….!!

Are you drooling yet?

Don’t get too excited about the black and white checked Manolo Blahnik’s you’re about to see in the next picture, ‘cuz they’re mine, all mine!

My heart skipped a beat when they fit perfectly…just like Cinderealla! Oh ya, my first ever pair of Manolo’s…eat your heart out, Carrie Bradshaw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And by the way, here’s almost the exact same pair available at Neiman Marcus, only I didn’t pay $675, not even close!!!

I absolutely cannot wait to share all the great outfits Amy put together for me, but you’re going to have wait. I’ll be showcasing each of my stellar outfits over the next couple weeks in my “What I Wore” blog posts. Trust me, you won’t want to miss it! The first one will be featured tomorrow, so make sure to check back!

In the meantime, why not head over to Your Best Friend’s Closet? You never know what you might find!

What I Wore: There’s Something About This Maxi

What I Wore: Bar lll Maxi, Gap Denim Vest, Kenneth Cole REACTION sandal (similar), Coach Legacy Romy Satchel, Bright Lilly Necklace, Henri Bendel Bangles, Michael Kors Runway Watch, Black Onyx Ring (similar).

So I wore this outfit on a shopping trip to Nordstrom and can I tell you every single sales associate asked where I got this dress! It was borderline weird. It was like I left one department and the sales associates called the next one I was headed for and told them to ask the same question. I mean really. I like this dress a lot, no doubt, but I didn’t think it was that over-the-top until the day I wore it to Nordstrom. I have to say, it’s very flattering with its subtle color blocking pattern and it’s incredibly comfortable. I really like the Bar lll brand by Macy’s. The clothing is very stylish and well priced. This dress was only $64.

What I Wore: Casual Beach Vacation

What I Wore: Striped Sleeveless Maxi – old,Sandra Ingrish Denim Shirt , Steve Madden Studded Tote from TJMaxx (similar), Kenneth Cole Reaction Sandal (similar), Henri Bendel Bangles, Michael Kors Runway Watch, Fedora (Similar) Jeweled Necklace from TJMaxx (similar).

We just got back from a whirl-wind family vacation to Florida. It felt great to totally reconnect as a family. There’s nothing that says quality family time than all three kids camped out in one room and with each other 24/7. When we’re at home, it seems like everyone so often is going their separate ways, but on vacation, there’s no escaping. We had a great time. We spent some time at the beach in Ponte Vedra, then went to south Florida to visit my in-laws and ended up in Orlando for a couple days at Universal Studios and Sea World.

When we’re on vacation in Florida, I have to admit, I go totally casual. I might put on a maxi dress to go out but usually it’s shorts, tank tops, bathing suits, no make-up and ‘au natural’ hair (i.e. curly and frizzy!). This was the closet I came to a blog worthy outfit.

I picked up this strapless striped maxi at Kohl’s a couple years ago. It’s such an easy throw on. And I’m just loving this chambray shirt. It’s the perfect length and a little fitted. I’ve been wearing it with everything: tied up with a maxi dress as seen here, as a layering piece over my t-shirts and tanks and even as a cover-up with my bathing suits. Talk about a versatile piece!

What I Wore: The New ‘Do

I’m Wearing: Crocheted Top TJMaxx (similar),Joe’s Jeans Calvin Klein Cropped Jacket (similar), Tory Burch Reva Bombe Clutch , Franco Sarto Wedge, Treska Earrings from Seasons By Peg, Herni Bendel Bangles, Caché white bangle (similar) Michael Kors Runway Watch.

A few of you were wanting to see pictures of my new shorter cut, and here they are. I have to say I was in major depression on Friday after having my hair extensions removed. I have really fine, thin hair and those extensions opened up my world to what it was like to have a nice thick glamorous head of hair (see how I blogged about them here). Despite the headache of maintenance and expense, I had really come to love them. That is until my hair started thinning so badly on one side of my hair that I was nearly down to bare scalp. That was the sign that after two and a half years, it was time to give my hair a rest.

These pictures were taken the day after my cut. This is the shortest I’ve ever worn my hair, and I have to say, now that I’m almost a week into my shorter look, I’m starting to embrace my easy to manage new cut. My husband on the other hand won’t admit it, but I’m pretty sure since he’s told me ever since I’ve met him that he wants “stripper hair”, that he’s not too fond of it, but what can I do?

As for the outfit, I feel like I need to branch out a little. Can you tell I really favor my cropped denim jacket and my white jeans? Perhaps I should be writing a blog post: 10 Ways to Wear a Denim Jacket and White Jeans.:) I guess it’s pretty obvious that they are among the “must have staples” in my wardrobe – along with my interchangeable silver and gold Michael Kors Runway watches of course! Anyway…isn’t this little crocheted coral top adorable? I picked it up for $12.99 at TJMaxx. SCORE! I especially like the length and the A-line shape. I recently picked up these chandelier earrings at a little boutique called Seasons By Peg in Woodstock, IL. Chandeliers are a major trend right now and I love the summery looking gold and silver combo. And you can actually see them – another benefit to short hair! I’ll have myself talked into this short hair thing sooner or later!

I’m Wearing: Caché Chevron Maxi, Caché Tote (Similar), BCBGeneration Sandal, Caché Cuff Bracelet Old,Michael Kors ‘Runway’ Chronograph Watch, Henri Bendel Bangles, Target Earrings (Similar).

These pictures were taken before the deep freeze set in (I want summer back, darn it!) and before my depressing haircut (a.k.a. the removal of my hair extensions). While it took me a day or two, I’m starting to embrace the new ‘doo and will be showing you all soon. In the meantime, here I am basking in the window of warmth we had last week. I picked up this dress way back in early February, and we finally got nice enough weather to wear it.

I love the chevron pattern and the way this dress camouflages all my bumps and bulges. Whenever I pick up something with this silky material I think it can either look really good or really bad in terms of showing bulges. This one works wonders! And how about this tote? I’m so bummed that I can’t refer you to this exact one. They still have this color block tote, but it comes in yellow instead of the orange. Still so cute, but I happen to be partial to the orange as it’s more of a standout.

Sorry I fell off the face last week. It was the last week of school for my kids and we had 8th grade graduation (hard to believe I’m now a mother of a high schooler – eek!) and I was running kids to doctors (did I tell you my daughter was just diagnosed with scoliosis?) and dentists preparing for camp and etc. I’m sure you know the drill!

Do you have any big plans this summer? You know it will be gone before you know it, so better start enjoying!!! Have a great week!

What I Wore: Dreaming of Summer

IMG_0793 IMG_0794 IMG_0817

I’m Wearing: Caché BlouseJoe’s Jeans, Mix No. 6 Sandal(Similar), DKNY Clutch (Similar),Michael Kors ‘Runway’ WatchWhite House Black Market Tank,  White Leather Wrap Bracelet (Similar), assorted bangles(Similar).

Happy Tuesday that feels like Monday! How was your Memorial Day Weekend? I think half the country had some of the worst Memorial Day weekend weather ever. I sure know ours was crappy here in Chicago!  I was actually in my winter coat at my daughter’s soccer game on Saturday – SERIOUSLY? At least it didn’t snow like out east!I snuck these pictures in during the one hour of sunshine we saw on Sunday. The lighting is a little off, but it was the best I could do.

On to the outfit! It’s been a while since I’ve worn any Caché, so I had to come back around. This sheer floral blouse has great colors making it the perfect match with about any bottom. While I love it with white, I’m thinking it will also look fab with a pair of jeans, colored shorts or even a black pencil skirt. The fabric drapes beautifully making it so flattering.

And aren’t these sandals oh so sexy? I picked these up at DSW for something like $39. I couldn’t find the black on-line, however, I was able to find the gold version here if you’re interested. I think you may have luck finding the black pair in store. They aren’t the most comfortable things in the world (I’m so used to wedges that any flat pair like this hurts my feet – plus I’m getting old, what can I say?), but I’m willing to sacrifice for the sexy look!

My kids are done with school this week and then it’s the chaos of summer. Wow, where has the time gone??

Spotlight Shoes: The Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale

If you haven’t already notice, I love Nordstrom. Not only do I love their merchandise, but I love their food, their awesome customer service, their return policy and most of all, their sales!

The Women’s Half-Yearly Sale is going on right now and of course I had to do some looking around. So many things are marked down, many up to 40%!  I wanted to share everything that caught my eye, but since there were so many things I decided to focus on shoes. Summertime shoes are so fun, and face it, you can never own too many shoes!

Here are my favorites from the Half-Yearly Sale which by the way ends on June 2nd, but I’m told the mark-downs will hold until all inventory is gone. Nice to know! Just click on the the picture to get details! Happy Memorial Day weekend and happy shopping!

What I Wore: Ready for a “Wild” Weekend

Nordstrom Wildfox Tiger Tee

Nordstrom Wildfox Tiger Tee

Nordstrom Wildfire Tiger Tee

I’m Wearing: Wildfox Tiger Graphic V-Neck Tee,Joe’s Straight Leg Ankle Jeans (Bonnie), Kelly & Katie ToteMichael Kors ‘Runway’ Chronograph Watch, Black patent sandals (Similar), leather wrap bracelet (Similar).

I’ve seen many of these animal graphic t-shirts and  thought they were all a little too “young” looking for me until I found this one. For some reason, this one spoke to me. I guess it’s because the styling is a little more sophisticated with the v-neck and the angled hem. It’ also a little “boxy” in the cut so it flatters both thin and curvy figures. And aren’t the colors in the floral design awesome? I think it’s great paired with these white jeans, but it would also be a super cute “throw-on” with a pair of shorts. I don’t know about you, but it feels like I spend most of my summer running around with the kids in a t-shirt and shorts.

Do you have any big plans for Memorial Day weekend? We’ll be spending the majority of our time at our daughter’s soccer tournament. At least I’m not going to have to feel bad about missing pool time since they’re only predicting a high of 57 degrees here tomorrow. What’s that all about? I want some warm weather PLEASE!

Between you and me, I’m hoping to find some time to shop all the incredible sales going on this weekend. We’ll see how that works out…!

Enjoy your long weekend!!

What I Wore: Happy Summer Stripes

Nordstrom French Connection Striped Dress

French Connection Striped Dress

Nordstrom French Connection Striped Dress

Nordstrom French Connection Striped Dress

I’m Wearing: French Connection Stripe Tank Dress, Calvin Klein Cropped Denim Jacket (similar), Sam Edelman ‘Trina’ Sandal Bujibaja Straw Tote (Similar), Hoop Earrings(Similar)Michael Kors ‘Runway’ Chronograph Watch.

If there was a dress I could live in all summer, this would be it! The cotton fabric of this dress is so soft you almost don’t feel like you’ve got anything on. Combine that with the perfect length and these awesome striped colors and you’ve got a winner. Never mind this dress is now 40% off during the Half-Yearly Sale at NORDSTROMthat starts today!!! Yes that’s right, this dress is on sale for $52! Bummer for me since I paid full price, but great for you!

And how about these Sam Edelman sandals? These are the ones I blogged about that we all four bought on girl’s weekend. You see I didn’t let that little bit of animal print scare me when I paired them with this striped dress. They make such a fashion forward statement with this dress. These sandals are so comfortable (I’m sooo about comfort) and stylish that I’m thinking of taking  advantage of the double reward points and free shipping and returns during the Women’s Half-Yearly Sale and order them in this color too!

Styling Tip: For those of us with a non-existent waist line (see the picture with the jacket off), adding a belt or a little cropped jacket like I did here creates the perfect illusion of a waist. Don’t be afraid to play around with jackets lengths. I find for me a cropped jacket works the best. A regular length jacket hits me closer to the hips which doesn’t create the waist I need and makes me look frumpy.
